Nikola Tesla Technical Museum

This was a free day on our tour. I visited the Nikola Tesla Technical Museum this morning, which was a short walk from our hotel. Tesla is an extremely important person in both Croatia and Serbia. You will see statues of him and also his picture is on the 100 Serbian dinar. Today, most of the electricity worldwide is based on Tesla’s invention of alternating current.

Tesla’s Birth House

A photo in the museum of Tesla’s birth house and his father’s church. His father was a Serbian Orthodox priest. I got interested in Tesla because of a slight connection. My cousin’s late husband was the grand–nephew of Tesla. I was surprised to see a photo of his grandmother at the museum. Another Tesla connection is from where I grew up on Long Island, New York. Tesla had his laboratory there and it is being made into a museum.

Technical Museum

The Nikola Tesla Technical Museum is quite large having exhibits other than the one on Tesla. Many items are on display such as this 1912 Frera motorcycle.

St. George the Dragon Slayer

After visiting the Technical Museum, I walked around our hotel area and saw this statue of St. George the Dragon Slayer.

Zagreb Funicular

Next, I went with two of my tour mates to the Old Town of Zagreb. We took a taxi to it though you could take a long walk to it from the hotel or else take a tram. At the Old Town, we took the Zagreb Funicular, one of the shortest and steepest funiculars in the world, from the Lower Town up to the Upper Town.

Dolac Market

We pretty much just covered the area of the Upper Town that we had done the day before except we also visited the Dolac Market, a farmers market for fruits, vegetables, cheese, fish, meat, flowers, etc. Yesterday was a Monday, a day when the market is closed, so something new to see today.

Taxi Ride

We decided to take a taxi back to our hotel as the ride to the Old Town was not much money. However, our ride back was at least three times as much. I don’t think the driver was trying to cheat us as we caught the taxi from a different area from where we got off and, hence, requiring a longer ride. Better to take a taxi from the main square. But we did get to see a bit more of the city and this very cute church.

I have put my photos of this day in Zagreb on a slideshow. Go to http://www.peggysphotos.com/zagreb–3/

Veliki Tabor

We passed the Veliki Tabor Castle, which dates back to the middle of the 15th century, with its present appearance dating back to the 16th century. The Count of Celije was its owner in the Middle Ages. His son, Frederick, fell in love with a girl, Veronika, from a poor family. The count refused to accept her so he accused her of witchcraft, had her drowned, and her body walled up in the castle. He imprisoned his son.
