Mekong Island Buddhist Temple Music

Music was being placed at the main temple of a Buddhist complex on Mekong Island, Phnom Penh. The movie also shows the inside of the beautiful temple.

Cambodian Dance Practice

This movie was taken at the Apsara Arts Association in Phnom Penh. Young girls and boys, usually either orphans or very poor, are given training in Cambodian classical dance. “Characteristic of Cambodian classical dance are standard hand gestures called kbach. They are performed at a slow, hypnotic pace, coordinated with synchronized sculptural poses that are infused with serenity and equilibrium. Each gesture symbolizes a different meaning and is connected to elements of nature like flowers, fruits, and leaves.”

They start training very young. The youngest girl in the group is adorable and was trying so hard to figure out the movements.

I really didn’t understand what I was watching until I saw Cambodian classical dances performed in a night show in Siem Reap. The movies I took there are to come.
