Going Home

I went back to my hometown of Northport, Long Island, New York, for my 50th high school reunion. Seeing people who I haven’t seen for 50 years and others who I have seen again but not recently was great fun.

This was only the third time I have been back to my hometown since I officially left in 1962––once for one day in 1994, then again for six days in 2008. Northport is a beautiful small, well–off town, of about 21,000 (for zip code 11768), connected to other small towns, quite a contrast to where I live now, a small city connected to other small cities as well as to a very big city, Los Angeles.

This was Cow Harbor Weekend in Northport. Northport’s original name was Cow Harbor, though this was almost kept a secret from us when I lived there, as who would want others to know that they were living in a town that ever had such a name. Cows used to be raised nearby and they would be taken away on boats after being paraded down Main Street. Now, its old name is being celebrated once a year.

Cow Harbor 10K Run

The first Cow Harbor event I watched was the 10K Run, one of the top 100 races in the United Stataes. The photo is of the winner of the race, Mohamed Trafel (28:17.4), from Duarte, California, only three small cities away from where I now live. I have put my photos of the 10K run on Facebook and you can see them if you wish by going to a Facebook link:

Cow Harbor Day

The second event I went to was the Cow Harbor Parade down Main Street. Before the parade, I walked down Main Street and to Northport Harbor at the end of it and watched the vendors setting up booths in the park. I took photos of my walk and they are on this website: Go to Slide Shows, United States, New York, “Northport: Cow Harbor Walk” or directly to

I also took a movie of the Cow Harbor Parade. It will give you an idea of an American small town parade. Go to Movies, United States, New York, second page, “Cow Harbor Parade” or directly to

Peter and Melissa Maravell in Concert

I made two wonderful visits to the house I grew up in. I am truly blessed that I have been able to keep in touch with the people who live there now. They actually now own the house much longer than I ever lived in it. My old house couldn’t be in better hands. I was invited to a wonderful concert given by Peter (half of the couple who now own the house) and Melissa Maravell (father and daughter) at the Harborfields Public Library. Both have sung with the New York City Opera and both also give music lessons. I took movies of the concert and you can see them on this website: Go to Movies, United States, New York, with the concert movies starting on the second page or go directly to

“Northport Snow”

I went back to the Harborfields Public Library to view a photo canvas, entitled “Northport Snow,” by Richard Podlesney, a very talented photographer and the son–in–law of the Maravells, of the houses along Northport Harbor in the snow.
