Leaving Copenhagen

Today, Lyn and I went on an optional tour from Copenhagen to Kronborg (Hamlet’s) Castle, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and Roskilde Cathedral. On the bus, we passed by these blocks of apartments. Per, our tour director, told us that these old buildings do not have elevators, so residents are going to do a lot of stair climbing until they become too old to do so and then have to move.

Coming into Helsingor

The car ferry from Sweden to Helsingor. Per told us that it has a very good restaurant and he and others dine on the ferry and go back and forth on the Øresund Sound until they finish their meal.

Kronborg (Hamlet’s) Castle

Kronborg Castle, called “Elsinore” in Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet”  is located in Helsingor, at the northeastern tip of the island of Zealand, Denmark’s main island. In the 1420s, King Eric VII built a fortress here to be able to collect levies from the ships entering the Øresund Sound. From 1574 to 1585, King Frederick II transformed it into a beautiful Renaissance castle. In 1629, a fire destroyed much of the castle, but King Christian IV had it rebuilt.

On the Way to Humlebaek

We saw a number of thatched straw houses on our way. These roofs can last from 30 to 70 years or even more. However, the roof ridge has to be reworked every 10–20 years.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, in Humlebaek, was our next stop. The museum is one of the most visited museums in Denmark. The museum has many sculptures in its gardens. This one is by Henry Moore.

The museum does not a permanent exhibition, though it has its own collection. What you see here on one visit may not be exhibited on your next visit. One of the present exhibits was called “Africa.” Here, an African “Scream.” We had a good lunch at the museum’s cafe.

We traveled inland through farm country from Humlebaek to Roskilde.

Roskilde Cathedral

The last stop on our optional tour was at the Roskilde Cathedral in Roskilde. The cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in the brick Gothic style. It is part of the Lutheran Church of Denmark and is where most of the Danish monarchy since the 15th century are buried.
