From Baddeck to the Louisbourg Fortress

Today, we drove from Baddeck to the Fortress of Louisbourg. Both places are boxed on the map.

From Baddeck to the Louisbourg Fortress

Louisbourg Fortress

The Fortress of Louisbourg was built in 1719 by the French after the British kicked the French out of Acadian and Newfoundland. It was a center for fishing and trade. The British captured the fortress in 1745, then returned it to the French, but captured it again in 1758 and destroyed it.

Canada started reconstructing the fortress in the 1960s––the bastion, houses, inns, warehouses, etc. Photo: one of the fortress streets.

Some of the re–created houses are quite large, such as this house that would have dated back to 1745.

All the furnishing and supplies, by decree, had to be brought from France, resulting in some elegant rooms.

Some of the houses and furnishings were more modest such as in this house of an engineer.

Baddeck

Babbeck has a number of historic buildings such as this one: the Old Baddeck Post Office and Custom House, built 1865–66.

Parking Lot Musician–MOVIE

This man was playing his violin in the parking lot at the Yacht Club where part of the Celtic Colours festival was being held. He said he was waiting for his wife to get the car. He probably had just performed at the festival. I asked him to play something for me and he did.

Celtic Music–MOVIE

Admission was free to hear the music at the Yacht Club and everyone was invited. Hundreds of Celtic musicians from Cape Breton and around the world were said to be here for the festival. Celtic music has its origin mainly from Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. Here is a movie of one of the groups of performers.

Canadian Thanksgiving

We were treated to a Thanksgiving turkey dinner at Giselle’s. Canada’s Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October. This year, 2015, it fell on October 12. Canada was the first country to celebrate Thanksgiving––in 1578 by Arctic explorer Martin Frobisher, which would be 40 years before the Pilgrims arrived.
