From Agra to Khajuraho via Train and Bus

We left our hotel in Agra early this morning to go to the train station. We would take a train from Agra to Jhansi and then travel by bus to Khajuraho with a stop in Orchha. The train station was a busy place and noisy and with many interesting characters.

Our train, the Shatabdi Express. The train was comfortable and the trip to Jhansi took a couple of hours.

The scenery from the train was mainly of the countryside.

We arrived in Jhansi and immediately got on a bus for our first stop in Orchha.

The Countryside

We drove through many miles of the Indian countryside on our way to Orchha.

I have put our trip from Agra to Orchha on a slide show. Go to

Orchha

Orchha was founded in 1531 and was capital of the Bundela kings until 1738. They built palaces, pavilons, a fort, and chatrries (memorials) to the rulers of Orchha. This is one of the chatrries. There were 14 altogether. We didn’t spend enough time here to fully explore the chatrries or enough time in Orchha to walk through the palace/fort or the temples. Orchha would make a very interesting all–day town to visit.

On the Road to Khajuraho

I was assigned the front seat on the bus today, which turned out to be quite a thrill ride as I could see all the action and there was much of it. The road was almost the size of a two–lane road with lines just indicating the sides of the roads––no middle line. Passing the truck on the right in the photo would be a tight fit. The driving is on the left in India.

It looks like almost an impossible situation in the photo, but here our bus would have really slowed down, the truck on the right would pass us, the bus on our side of the road would get behind the truck and pass us, then our driver would loudly beep his horn to tell the cart driver to that he was going to pass him and that he should get over to the left. This all works as there are shoulders on both side of the roads and sometimes our bus had to use them.

I took a movie of my “thrill ride” and it is in the Movie section. Go to Movies, Asia, India and it is on the first page: “Driving from Orchha to Khajuraho.”

We reached Khajuraho about dinner time. No nightlife tonight so a good chance to get some needed rest.

I put my photos of Orchha and our ride to Khajuraho on a slideshow. Go to
