Today, we went on a day trip from Dubrovnik, Croatia, to Montenegro. We visited the Old Town of Kotor and also the Old Town of Budva. Photo shows the Bay of Kotor and some villages along the bay.

St. George Monastery & Sveti Dorde

The two islands in the Bay of Kotor in the photo are of the St. George Monastery on the left and Sveti Dorde, a church, on the right. Sveti Dorde is a man–made island built from rocks where an icon of the Madonna and Child was found in 1452.

We stopped to visit the Old Town of Kotor. Kotor was settled in Roman times and has been fortified since the Middle Ages.

The Italian–looking Old Town of Kotor. Kotor was a province of the Venetian Republic from 1420 to 1797.

The Church of St. Maria in punta, the oldest church in Budva. it is believed to date back to 840.

Great Wall of Kotor

After visiting Old Town Budva, on the way back to Dubrovnik, we passed the Great Wall of Kotor which protected the medieval town of Kotor. On top of the moutain is the Castle of San Giovanni (St. John), a fortress built between the 9th and 19th centuries.

We drove back to Dubrovnik with a view of the coast on the way.
