St. Andrews

We left Edinburgh this morning and traveled north to St. Andrews, the Home of Golf. The St. Andrews golf course is the oldest golf course in the world, dating back to about the middle 1400s. Today, there are six courses at St. Andrews and championship golf tournaments are held here. The weather had turned chilly. I also knew that I had caught a cold from not being dressed warmly enough in Edinburgh and I was hoping that it wasn’t going to get any worse.

As I don’t play golf, I quickly left the area of the golf courses and ventured uphill to the town of St. Andrews. Here is one of the very large and beautiful houses that have the beach as their backyard.

A view of St. Andrews Cathedral and St. Rule’s Tower. St. Andrews Cathedral was built in the 12th century and was once the largest church in Scotland. It stones were pillaged and used to build the town of St. Andrews. You can climb up the tower.

I believe that this is the city of Dundee, the 4th largest city in Scotland.

Blair Castle

Blair Castle is located in the Blair Atholl area. We are now in the Scottish Highlands. This castle dates back to the early 1300s, but it has been added on to during its 700–year history.

Our Tour Director

Our tour director Ian Linn at Blair Castle. He wore his kilt most days on our tour. No, he (or any of the other men we encountered wearing kilts) would tell us what they wore under their kilts. This seems to be a kilt–wearer’s secret.

Country House

We passed this house on our way to Aviemore, where we were to spend the night at the four–star Macdonald Highland Hotel. We ate a very good dinner at the hotel.
