Leaving Fisherman’s Wharf

Keith had a breakfast meeting this morning, so I went down the street to IHop for breakfast and then went on a Bay Cruise, something that I had not done before. In the photo, we are leaving Fisherman’s Wharf.

The Marina District

The orange dome belongs to the Palace of Fine Arts, the remaining Panama–Pacific Exhibition building that Keith and I visited on our first day in San Francisco. The homes (many rebuilt after the last big San Francisco earthquake) in the Marina District are quite nice.

Alamo Square Folk Art

The bay cruise was only for 1 hour and I had three hours before I had to be back at the Sheraton to take the airport shuttle to Oakland Airport. I was to meet Keith at the airport as his meetings were on the Oakland side of the bay. I decided to take the long bus ride from Fisherman’s Wharf to Alamo Square. One reason that the bus ride was long was because, even though San Francisco is a walking city, there are bus stops on every block. Also, I had to transfer to a second bus and the connections were slow. Total bus fare there and back was only $1.25. If you finish you bus traveling within a certain time period, you only need the free transfer you are given for any bus in any direction. Quite a bargain. I saw this folk art exhibit at Alamo Square and I don’t know exactly what to make of it––something to do with shoes and plants.

Postcard Houses

These are the houses that I came to take a photo of. They appear on postcards of San Francisco as well as souvenir photos and paintings. The last time I saw them, when I was here with Eddie in 2002, one of them was being worked on. Now I was able to take a good photo of them.

Postcard Houses

Closer–up view of the Postcard Houses. There are many Victorian homes in this area and I put them on a slide show on this site. Go to Slide Shows, United States, California, “San Francisco: Victorian Houses.”  I also put on it some of the Victorian houses I saw near Lafayette Park, on Union Street, and in the Marina District. I tried to decide what type of Victorian houses they were. My guidebook says there are four types––Stick (1860–90), Italianate (1850–85), Queen Anne (1875–1905), and Gothic Revival (1850–80). I didn’t see any Gothic Revival houses. Many of the houses are mixtures of two or more types, but you can get an idea of the different types by looking at the slideshow and also at the next three photos.
